Exercise training and diet supplementation have been shown to be effective in preventing sarcopenia in some studies, but little has been known about the combined effects of training with supplements, particularly in older people. Scientists at the University of Southampton, England, have found that although there are studies that have found diet can enhance the effects of exercise to prevent muscle loss in later life, the total current evidence about what works is inconsistent. In the study, published in Clinical Interventions in Aging, scientists from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at the University of Southampton carried out a review of combined diet and exercise training trials in men and women aged over 65 years old. The course aims to give students experience working in a multi-disciplinary context, interacting with global health actors and ultimately devising a strategy to address a global health disparity theyre passionate about. On April 20, the students in this years capstone course presented posters on their projects and explained their processes and results to event attendees. Six teams of seniors shared solutions ranging from using telemedicine to improve diabetes management in North Carolina to addressing maternal depression in northeastern Afghanistan. Students Given Flexibility to Choose Topics The variety of projects reflects the leeway students were given in completing the semester-long project. Teams were given a hypothetical $300,000 budget and were free to address whatever global health disparity interested them. This years projects included: Dialing Into Diabetes: Using Telemedicine to Improve Diabetes Management in Rural North Carolina Addressing Maternal Depression in Northeastern Afghanistan: A Packaged Intervention to Improve the Health of Mothers and Infants NC Farmworker Access to Health Information Chocolate Milk Cafe: Improving Breastfeeding Outcomes among Low-Income African American Women in the Piedmont Region of North Carolina Hepatitis C in Egypt: Developing Patient- and Community-based Education Programs Think Straight: Using Theatre to Promote Gender Expression and Sexual Identity Dialogue among Youth Nicole Savage, a student on the Dialing into Diabetes team, said having so much freedom made it difficult to know where to start but helped her think through the process of finding a solution. She said most of her teams time was spent talking to NGOs, doctors and other global health actors before beginning to formulate a solution. You dont want to go into a community and start making a lot of changes, Savage said. In the global health program, weve learned that you first need to understand everything about that community and you have to talk to a lot of people. Then you can start assessing their needs and brainstorming solutions. Course Is a Culmination of their Global Health Skills and Knowledge The capstone course is structured so that students discuss their interests and form teams at the beginning of the semester, then take a few weeks to decide on a project and contact experts and global health actors, and then use the rest of the semester to flesh out the project.

Researchers Discover Never-Before-Seen Tick-Borne Disease

Clowney hasn't been on the field much since Houston drafted him in May. The outside linebacker had sports hernia surgery in the offseason and suffered a concussion during training camp before injuring his knee in the season opener. (AP Photo/Mark Zaleski, File) Nearly a fifth of the National Football League settlement approved this week compensating former players with head injuries could go to their health insurers instead. As a result of federal laws and court rulings enabling insurers to recover costs of medical treatment for injuries, Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers will be reimbursed before players receive any money. Their share will reduce the value of a deal already criticized by some ex-players' lawyers as inadequate. "It is an enormous problem," said George Washington University law professor health diseases and disorders Alan B. Right now, there really isn't a separate deductible for mental health and there isn't a higher copay, so on that side, you know, they really have complied. But on another sort of subtler and harder-to-pinpoint side, advocates are saying they're really not complying. Insurance companies, in order to keep down costs, they will do things called "medical necessity" review. Basically, they look at someone's care and ask is it really medically necessary. And advocates say they're applying those sorts of cost-control techniques way more stringently on the mental health side and the substance abuse side than they are on the physical health side.

Health: The Right Diagnosis and the Wrong Treatment by Marcia Angell | The New York Review of Books

Andrew Getty's death appeared to be from natural causes, Los Angeles County coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said, but it has been initially called an accident because of medication found at the scene. He said coroner's officials need to wait for the results of further examination and toxicology tests, which could take up to 10 weeks to process. "The tentative information that we do have is that he was not feeling good for the last couple months," Winter said, "and he supposedly had an appointment tomorrow with a personal physician." A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation said that Getty had been complaining of stomach pain in the days prior. Another official with knowledge of the investigation said authorities found prescription medications and "injectables" at the home, where court records indicate he had lived for 18 years. The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

Assuming the recalcitrant states come around and all parts of the law eventually go into effect, what are we to make of it? Brill is pessimistic, and so am I. He well describes the two principal causes of escalating costs in our current system: first, the overuse of exorbitantly priced tests and procedures by entrepreneurial providers responding to a fee-for-service payment system that rewards such overuse, and second, the existence of hundreds of private insurance companies that generate huge overhead costs throughout the system, much of which supports or counters bureaucratic efforts to avoid or minimize payments for patients care. Obviously, any health system reform must do something about these two drivers of cost inflation. Barack Obama; drawing by John Springs But Obamacare does very little about either of them.

Bisexual women have worse mental health than lesbians in the UK | EurekAlert! Science News

Homophobic prejudice is now widely and rightly condemned; specific stigma around bisexual identity needs to be similarly confronted." In the diseases UK, the numbers of women identifying as lesbian and as bisexual are similar.[3] However, only 16% of the survey participants were bisexual women. The study authors suggest this may be linked to bisexual women's reluctance to disclose their sexual identity. The authors add that "concealment of sexual orientation is known to be related to poorer mental health in sexual minority women". The study authors suggest that worse mental health in bisexual women than in lesbians may be due to more negative social attitudes towards bisexuality compared with lesbian and gay identity. Consequently, bisexual women may have a more negative attitude towards themselves, and expect more social rejection, putting their mental health at risk. The new findings differ from those of a similar UK survey[4] in 2003, which found no difference in psychological distress between bisexual women and lesbians.

A Gift? Health Care Without The Business - Forbes

Photo credit: Kevin Kay/Wikimedia Commons Dr. Faten Nabeel Al-Zaben of the Faculty of Medicine at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and a colleague studied 65 children ages seven to 13 years old who wet their beds, and 40 healthy children without a bedwetting problem as a comparison group. Next, the researchers divided the children with bedwetting problems into two groups, those who were punished for bedwetting and those who weren't. On average, children who were punished for bedwetting at night wet their beds more often than the children who werent punished. The punished kids also showed symptoms of depression that were more severe than the other two groups of kids. The effect was worst when parents physically punished their kids, and the more often they punished their children, the more likely the children were to be depressed and have reduced quality of life scores. Urinary incontinence affects both the child and the family on several levels. It is often a source of shame and embarrassment for the affected child, and children who have experienced treatment failure have a lower self-esteem, the authors write.

Nissan Sentra has many new refinements for 2014 Earlier in my career I worked as a clinician-scientist, led a cancer research lab and cared for people with leukemia, lymphoma and rare blood disorders. A reader might want to know at least some of my medical history that's relevant to my writing: A radiologist detected a Stage 1, invasive breast cancer upon my first screening mammogram when I was 42 years old. After surgery and chemotherapy for that, I underwent complex spine surgery for scoliosis. My current interests include ethics, journalism and communication in medicine. I am writing a book on changing attitudes about cancer. I teach part-time at Weill Cornell Medical College, where I am a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine.
